I heard about this just last week and thought I would share. Many, many, many years ago, St. Nicholas was making his rounds in Europe. The thing that I never learned in grade school (I went to Catholic school and heard the apocryphal stories of the saints) was that St. Nicholas had a sidekick. While Nicholas would give candy and other presents to the good little boys and girls, his sidekick, Krampus, would grab the bad little children, swat them with switches or rusted chains and then throw them in his sack and take them back to his cave where he would eat them. This creature, also known as the Christmas Devil, is celebrated during the evening of December 5, which is the day before St. Nicholas Day. I left some links below the picture to give you more resources to read about this special creature.
