My Musical Memories, #5

My Saturday Scavenger Hunt is below...

This week, I am looking at my first single song memory.  To me, this is one of my favorite songs of all time.  It contains a great melody, great harmonies and, most importantly, great lyrics.  Although this group wrote so many great songs throughout their long career, this one just stands out to me as exceptional.

Crosby, Stills and Nash
Southern Cross
1982

This song was introduced to me by my mom and I never looked back. This is one of the few songs that raises the hair on the back of neck when I hear it. The harmonies make the whole song which is why no cover could do it justice (the studio recording did not include Crosby or Nash at all). As I grew older and listened to it, I realized that lyrics were perfect, which I began to appreciate more and more. This song is not just a musical memory, but triggers my memories of the summer and being by the ocean in the early evening on Cape Cod as the sun goes down (although this song is about sailing the South Pacific). I have never seen the Southern Cross, but I will one day and I will understand why I came this way.

There are plenty of songs that I will be writing about in weeks to come.  Most of them will be of the singer/songwriter variety, but they will all stand out on their own.  Let me ask you, what song is it that raises the hairs on the back of your neck?  There's always one.
