I started The Game Board in August 2003 with the rest of the crew (to review, Stress Fracture, Amorphous Blob and Kloud IX) and commenced designing the site. Well, the original look of the site received so much criticism from outside sources that I considered quitting before I started. The site was based on frames architecture which is not a good thing. So, I decided to learn Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) which is pretty daunting to learn on a short schedule. Eventually I would learn it, but it wouldn't be enough. I was tired of making individual pages for each and every article, review, rant and other stuff, so I found out that PHP and MySQL would be a good thing to learn. It was, it allowed everybody to post their own stuff and gave me a break.
The Game Board would soon include a discussion forum. I decided on PHPbb which is very versatile for what we were doing. It was also easy to modify and I decided to incorporate the entire site into the forum. I custom modded the front page and was pleased with the results. Things looked great, but it was a gaming and tech site with nothing special to offer. We had under thirty members and nothing seemed to be working out and frustrations (primarily mine) were running high. We weren't getting any new visitors and I was feeling pigeon-holed with this site. I wanted to do something more. I made the decision to shut down The Game Board, but I felt bored and out of touch without a site. So, I'll let you know what I did next week.
